A new way to work out

So, it all started at my Sister in Law’s home. I love visiting there. There is a reason for that (besides her being a great cook and her kids being awesome and she and her husband being warm and funny people).

The reason is Mario Dance Dance Revolution. Everytime I go visit, I sit at the table eating dinner, my feet tapping on the floor while I wait nervously for the magic words one of my nephews will eventually utter;  ” Auntie J, wanna go play the dance game?”.  At those words I  jump from the table and sprint down the stairs to the basement and eagerly wait for my nephew to set up the game, so I can start jumping to the music, trying my darnedest to step on the correct arrow at the correct moment, in order to one day pass a level.  So far I am failing miserably. But I love it.  I am addicted.  I actually get nervous and jealous when my nieces and nephews take their turns (though I don’t let it show, I AM THE ADULT!). It is my crack.

A few weeks ago, my husband came home with an X-box a friend gave him. The first thought in my head “Dance Dance Revolution will be mine…and I’m gonna get me the adult version!” Sadly the X-box is an older model, and DDR is hard to get for it, really only available on Ebay, where it is super expensive and shipping alone is about $40 USD.

I was, however, committed to perusing Ebay until I found a great deal. It was then that  I saw a game, available in Canada, low shipping, for $20. Pump It Up Exceed. After reading some reviews I discovered it is  considered comparable to my beloved DDR, so I bought it.

It came a few days ago. WOW. Pump it up is HARD! Keep in mind, the DDR I was playing was the kid’s version (and I pretty well sucked at that!), so the adult version of PIU is killer. I truly cannot play this game, at all. But trying is fun and addictive…I did 40 minutes last night without even noticing, and by the end was so sweaty it was like I had come in from a stinky rain shower.  I plan to keep working at it until I get good, and given that there are, seriously, about a million different levels (of which I am playing the easiest, on the slowest song), there is a lot of challenge for me there!

Is it a game? Is it exercise? for me it is both, and fun and super-addictive. A fun and addictive way to burn calories! What could be better than that?

I remember it in Korea, but it was always too busy to actually play…and I was too embaressed to try in front of all the teens that were so good at it. I actually saw it at the movie theater last night! I played the real arcade game at Great Wolf Lodge, and LOVED it!

I’ve always wanted to try it when I see it at Silvercity but of course I’m way too old and I’m really terrified of landing flat on my face by the 2nd or 3rd note. It looks like an absolutely amazing workout – and great to have it at home to boot! Good for you!

Jill, we have that DDR game at our house too! LOL! It was popular in Japan when I was teaching there EIGHT years ago! It’s now popular here, which is so funny how far behind we are compared to Japan. Anyway, I agree with you….it’s soooooo much fun AND a great workout! LOL!
