My Internet friend Rachel was a guest blogger on On Balance today, writing about having an only child.
As a fellow parent to an only, I am always interested in other peoples reasons for having an only child, as well as responses.
Responses to Rachel’s post quickly went off topic and downhill, but prior to that, it seems the biggest concern readers had with onlies is that they will be alone in caring for ailing parents when they are adults.
I suppose my response to that is that experiences in my life have shown me that siblings are no guarantee that one will have support when dealing with elderly parents…and sometimes can be far more of a problem than a support when this difficult time comes. So, this is really not a compelling reason for me to have more kids. Irregardless of siblings, I have no doubt that my daughter will create a circle of support around her, with the people of her choosing, as we all ultimately do.
