one million dollars

I will give anyone that can provide me with a non-dairy non-soy product that tastes JUST LIKE CHEESE one million dollars. I mean it. Bonus points if you turn it into lasagna for me.

This elimination diet is getting depressing.  For the most part I am used to it now, but at times (especially when I am already feeling sad/depressed/overwhelmed by something…or nothing ) I find it really depressing that I longer can eat what I want to. I am someone who really gets a lot of joy out of eating the things I enjoy…and even though I don’t find it very difficult to find things to eat , not being able to eat what I want to can feel pretty shitty at times.

But, I just cannot imagine switching to formula. I don’t even like the idea of regular formula, imagine how manufactured non-dairy  non-soy formula must be? That said a lot of people do go to formula in this situation, either because they cannot maintain an elimination diet (which I can totally understand), or ignorant doctors tell them it is better for their babies, though in most circumstances, the benefits of breast-feeding (even if you cannot make your milk  100% allergen free) outweigh the risk s of the allergens.

Anways, breast-feeding is just such a part of baby-parenting for me, switching to formula because of this is still not an option. When I see how content my little baby is at my breast, I know I am making the right choice. Not to mention in my opinion dealing with bottles and formula is just a pain in the butt compared to just undoing my bra to feed my baby. In spite of these annoying intolerances of Charlotte’s, I still feel very blessed to be able to quite easily breast-feed my kids.

On the bright side, I am losing lots of weight. My diet used to have way to many breads, pastas and crackers.  I can still eat some of these things-but what good is bread, pasta or crackers without cheese or butter-or both?!

New mom advice

These are things I found worked with the girl and seem to be working with Charlotte, so I decided to post for anyone that googles their way here!

1) If your baby is fussy and wont sleep or settle down during the day, GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. I know it is scary to do with a fussy baby…but a lot of fussy babies do better “on the go” than at home. Even my “not too fussy” babies tend to be more content (and nap more) when we are out and about than at home–maybe partly because I am more relaxed when I am just focussing on strolling in the mall or supermarket than when I am looking at the laundry and dirty dishes I cannot get to!!!

2) Wear your baby if they like to be held a lot. Try different carriers or holds (with a sling or wrap) until you find one that works-many newborns (especially bf ones) prefer upright carries to the cradle hold everyone assumes they’ll like.  Having one of those “always needs to be held” babies seems so much more managable when you have free hands and your back is not aching all day!

3) If you need to shower and baby is fussing, put them in the car-seat/bouncy seat and bring them in the bathroom with you. At the very least, the screaming wont bug you as much when you are in the shower (I am not a fan of letting my babies cry, but 5 minutes in the shower wont kill them and will make YOU feel so much better). For my babies though…the white noise of the water and steamy room often lulled them to sleep. This is how I usually get Charlotte  down for the first nap of the day, around 2 hours after waking when she starts to get fussy. Then I leave her there while I do my stuff. Unfortunately, 2 days a week I have to be out of the house before her nap time and cannot use this trick. But when I can, it is a great one that worked with the girl as well.

4) When your bf baby wants to nurse non-stop, let them. It is frustrating, but the sooner you give into it and stop trying to get it to end by handing them off, or with pacifiers, or bottles, or whatever…the sooner your milk will increase (which is why the babies are doing it, to bring in more milk and prepare for a growth spurt) and it will end. They often sleep better after a growth spurt as well! This is easier said than done…but really is best. Get some DVDs, settle on the bed, and just do it!

point form update, with pics

1. Here is how we spend much of our days:

Charlotte, like her older sister, is an absolute boobie monster! She spends much of her awake time breast-feeding, or rooting for food. I am lucky in that I have now had 2 babies who BF has gone wonderfully for right from the start.  Charlotte has a great latch, and my milk came in just like it was supposed to. I have very little pain (sometimes a bit when she latches rather enthusiastically) or problems.

Note how little of my breasts you can see, even without a blanket. I never understood why people make such a big deal about BF in public or in front of people. It is feeding a baby after all…not to mention most of us have seen breasts!!  I must say, however, that in my 28 months of BF the Girl and the 2 weeks I have BF Charlotte, I have not heard any negative comments. What has been said behind my back, I do not know or care.

2. We also spend a lot of time like this. Charlotte loves to be held upright and nestle her head in my neck or under my chin.  For this reason we are using the Mei Tai and Bjorn much more than the slings for now. No baby wearing pics yet…but they’ll come.DSC01977.jpg

3. Cloth Diapering is going great. We use mostly BumGenius 3.0 (though this picture is one made by a Work At Home Dad on Ebay). Since Charlotte is still at the 12 poops a day stage, I am having to do a load of diapers a day….but soon she’ll start pooping and peeing a bit less (plus I’ll get my last order of diapers) and I’ll probably be able to go to a load every other day. As it is,  since I am at home 2 loads of laundry a day (one of diapers, one a mish-mash of whatever is in all the laundry baskets) is pretty manageable.

I am also using  flannel cloth wipes, which are so soft I wanna wipe my own butt with them.  The solution I use is mostly water with dabs of olive oil, baby soap and tea tree oil mixed in.

4. The girl is still a baby too, although sometimes she seems so big. She seems to be adjusting well for the most part, though of course she has her moments where she complains about the changes (like when I try to get her to stop running around like a raving lunatic when Charlotte is sleeping. Not that we try to make her silent, but I’d like her to show a little courtesy when someone is sleeping) but she is in love with her little sister and the man and I make sure she always knows how important  and how loved she is.

5. As for me, I am fine. Tired when I wake at night to nurse, of course…but not exhausted during the days and feeling good. I am pretty well all healed up (though I was not very damaged by the birth in the first place) and feel much better and more energetic than I did when I was pregnant. My carpal tunnel is almost gone, and my swelling is getting better. I can finally get my boots back on (yeah, I was getting tired of soaked feet) and am working on my rings.

I guess that’s all for now. A few more pics to finish off:
