Blue and beady

The second product I got from Banler is Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads. I LOVE exfoliators and really had high hopes for this product. Claims (from the bottle) are:

This highly effective, gentle, non-abrasive scrub for all skin types that contains soft ultra-gentle jojoba beads and botanical nutrients that work in two ways. First, they help exfoliate surface dead skin cells, allowing active treatment products and moisturizers to penetrate better when applied. Then, our ultra-fine jojoba beads help open clogged pores and emulsify the sebum that contributes to blackheads and whiteheads. Because these unique buffing beads gradually dissolve with continued contact with the skin’s surface, the risk of irritation is minimal, leaving the skin smooth and refreshed.

Sounds great, eh? Exfoliates, and gets rid of sebum. Unfortunately, this product just did not live up to my expectations. I have used it on my face, upper arms and chest daily for a couple weeks now. It is fine, but way too gentle for my tastes. I like a much scrubbier exfoliant. I know some would say that damages the skin, but I don’t believe that is the case once you get used to them and use them sparingly (which is fine with me, I have little desire to add exfoliating to my DAILY routine anyways…with a good exfoliator once or twice a week should be enough. I used to live in Asia, and man did they exfoliate there, scrubbing with rough towels until flakes of skin fell off everywhere. Koreans have very soft skin though, not damaged at all. I got in the habit of heavy duty exfoliating there and still prefer it.

Back to Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads: Just didn’t cut it. Two things I use exfoliators for regularly are the the dry patches and bumps I get on on my upper arms, and the oily white bumps I get next to my nose. This product did next to nothing for these areas. As well, I did have some whiteheads when using the product, and it did nothing for them. Nothing. I do like the marine scent and how easily the beads rinse off (sometimes an issue with scrubs), but not enough to buy this product, especially at the hefty price of $30.60 at Banler (more elsewhere) for an 8oz bottle. Back to my favorite exfoliant, Derma E Microdermabrasion Scrub or my more affordable second choice scrub, Queen Helene!

I will say, however, that the Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads did get some great reviews at make-up alley.com, so if you are a fan of gentler scrubs, you may want to ignore me and try it anyways!

The ultimate in going green!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here I am, using my Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque. This is my very favorite mask ever!!!

I love it because:
* It smells great (minty, duh!) and feels cool and refreshing.
* It is very affordable (3.00 for a 30z tub at
Sally) , and a little goes a long way.
* It immediately makes skin look tighter, cleaner and refreshed.
* With regular usage, it has minimized large pores, blackheads, and those oily bumps that seen to accumulate
next to my nostrils.
* As a spot treatment, it dramatically reduces nasty pimples overnight.

Any problems?
No, not for me. It is probably not the perfect masque for all skin types though:

*It is a masque meant to dry up oil and close pores, so for already dry skin, it may be too drying. For my combination skin, it is just fine. I have been using it weekly for over a year nownow, and always used my moisturizer afterwards. I have not noticed any excessive dryness.

*The minty smell and feel that I enjoy would probably annoy some people, and may be a problem for those with sensitive skin.

A shameful confession

I use a Diva Cup, cloth Panti-liners and reusable shopping bags. I turn off all our lights and appliences when not in use. I have minimized the use of our air conditioner and furnace, and how strongly I set them. I re-use the plates at buffets. I flush selectively. I do all laundry in cold water. I changed my lightbulbs to energy saving. I am anal about using my green bin and recycling box to their full advantage. Over the past year I have worked really hard to do my part to take care of the envirnment and minimize waste. I could almost be called…crunchy!

But.

I cannot admit it.

I must admit it.

I.

Use.

Gahhh……

I’l spit it out: Disposablecleansingwipestocleanmyface (covers face in shame and to protect it from thrown eggs and insults)

I know. It is horrible. I am a hypocrite. I am a bad person. I am killing our planet.

I also am a  person who wears a lot of make-up that needs to be washed off thoroughly.

Yet, I am a person who HATES leaning over the sink to wash my face every night, splashing water all over the counter and my ams.

Lastly, shamefully, I am a person who loves the ease of grabbing a wipe and washing my face while I watch TV, blog, read, cook, exercise, walk to the laundry machine…you get the picture.

But it is wrong.

I have 1 wipe left. Tomorrow, I will go to the drugstore and buy a new cleanser. One that does not fill my garbage bin and end up in landfills.

Any suggestions for a good cleanser that will not dry out or break out my gracefully aging yet still prone to pimples and dry patches skin?

Here is an old review of my current, shameful, product (that I have used and loved for 4 years).
