2014 book talk

I’ve read some great books in 2014, here are mini reviews of some that really stood out:

The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer
A back and forth story of the past and present of a group of people who first meet at summer camp as teenagers and then grow into middle age together and apart. Lots of interesting themes and story lines: talent, drugs, sexuality, abuse, class, money, love and friendship. A lot of this book spoke to me and the nature of my own maturity (or lack) and relationships.

The Good Luck of Right Now by Matthew Quick
The quirky story of a young (likely on the spectrum) man on his own in the world after the loss of his mother. Great characters, an easy and engaging read by the author of Silver Linings Playlist.

The Girl with all the Gifts by M.R. Carey
A dystopian sci-fi novel about a young girl named Melanie, who is very special and unique. I can’t say much more without saying too much…but it is a quick and easy read that I had a hard time putting down!

Last letter from your Lover by Jojo Moyes
Tells the Interconnecting stories of an unhappily married woman with amnesia in the 1960s, and a modern day journalist. A well written mystery/love story.

The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
The story of a widowed bookseller in a small town. Simple, elegant, perfectly written. Sounds boring (it was on my list a while before I read it) but actually brilliant. Probably my favorite book of 2014.
